Today we are launching our new Artisan Story-Inspired Run/Walk Playlist! Over a year in the making, this project links together the stories of the enslaved women whose freedom we will be running for this year with the freedom stories of our Artisans, who are employed in our Freedom Business thanks to funds raised in previous Aruna Runs. Shared in first-person, the stories of our Artisans are genuine, raw, and emotional. They take the listener on a journey from the darkness of the brothels to the light of freedom through employment with Aruna. The songs of female artists featured on the playlist reflect the Artisans’ transformation from powerless and hopeless to strong, independent, and empowered women.
This first installment of the playlist is geared towards our Spring 2021 Aruna Runs. Participants in Spokane, WA; Minneapolis, MN; and Montrose, CO will all be running and walking to help bring lifelong freedom to Asma. Our Training Center staff in Mumbai personally know Asma and are actively working to free her from the brothels. Asma’s name will be on participant’s race bibs, and e-mail updates on her journey to freedom will be sent throughout the year. The ultimate goal is to make Asma’s story like Priya’s, our first employee who has been with us now for seven years. Shared in poignant detail, Priya’s story is a testament to the powerful change race participants help create when they run for her freedom on race day.
Check it out! The spring playlist is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
A tremendous thank you to Dan Curruthers, Samantha Hobbs, and Adam Pleiman of Gwynne Sound for donating their time and talent to bring the playlist idea to life.
